Introduction
The Museum of Sacred Art is located in the former Bishop’s Palace. Its construction started in the 16th century and throughout the 17 and 18th centuries was many times modified.
Two fundamental areas have to be differentiated and highlighted. The Flemish Art nucleus, starting in the late 15th century until the late first half of the 16th century, with painting, sculpture and jewellery, and the Portuguese Art nucleus, since the early 16th century until the mid 18th century, with painting, sculpture and also ‘Paramentaria’, which consists in liturgical objects to ornament the space and clothing for religious ceremonies.
The importance of the Flemish Art collections is justified through the intense trading and commercial contacts established with Flanders since the 15th century up to the mid 16th century. The main reason was the sugar production, largely mass-produced in the south coast of Madeira island.
